Face it: its going to be hard for you to quit drinking if you still have positive feelings toward alcohol. After all, its simply human nature to want to hold onto something you like to do, or still care about in some way.
However, what if you CAN learn to genuinely HATE alcohol? Wouldnt your journey from alcoholism to sobriety be made easier? The answer is yes it will be MUCH, MUCH easier.
Have you ever considered viewing your alcohol problem as a failed relationship? Sounds silly, I know but just think about it for a moment. Havent you suffered through the heartache of a failed relationship at some point in your life? And hasnt alcohol ALSO brought a tremendous amount of heartache into your life?
How did you get over that guy or girl who broke your heart? What helped you finally move on? More than likely, you started to focus on their shortcomings and the things they did wrong rather than on any happy memories involving them. Eventually, the bad memories overwhelmed the good memories, and you began to see yourself as being worthy of someone better in your life.
Use This Same Approach to Hate Alcohol
With this exact same mindset you can turn those warm and fuzzy feelings about alcohol into a genuine dislike for what its done (and is doing) TO you. Here are a few good ways to start hating alcohol:
- Remember the Bad Times: Recalling the many bad memories youve experienced with alcohol is a solid foundation towards learning to hate it. Ive previously referred to this as The Biggest Secret of Sobriety, because many problem drinkers only occasionally do it, instead of employing it as a deliberate strategy. Just like you overcame a broken heart by remembering the bad times you had with someone, you can develop an anger towards alcohol by remembering how its destroyed your life.
- Recognize How its STILL Hurting You: Alcohol is bad for you in every way possible. From your physical and mental health, to your family, finances and future goals. Noticing how its STILL destroying your life is yet another way to start to hate alcohol. You wouldnt put up with a boyfriend or girlfriend causing this much pain and anguish in your life, so dont let alcohol do it either!
- Notice What Its Doing to Others: We all know someone whos life has deteriorated from alcohol abuse. They may look years older than they are, or have suffered a broken marriage or financial ruin from alcoholism. Perhaps theyve even been in trouble with the law. If youve ever had a friend whose marriage fell apart, you probably were able to notice the signs long before it happened. Take the same approach with your relationship with alcohol: learn from the mistakes of others.
- Get Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: Its not just enough to feel sick of the alcoholic lifestyle. You must get to the point where enough is enough, and youre no longer going to just feel bad about things, but youre going to CHANGE YOUR HABITS so you life can get better. Think back to a troubled personal relationship you had, when one day you just KNEW that you had to get that toxic person out of your life. Take the same approach with alcohol, for it is the epitome of a toxic relationship!
- Recognize the Alcohol Mirage: Sometimes we think back to a happy time, and we mistakenly believe that alcohol contributed to the happiness. When this happens you need to realize that it is a mirage, and immediately re-focus your mind on the many bad things that happened because of the booze. You could compare this to seeing your Ex at a party, and for a fleeting moment you remember the good times you had. But then the reality of the bad times comes flooding back, and you remember why you had to get that person out of your life. Alcohol is the same. Dont let it fool you into thinking it can make you happy. It wont, and you KNOW it wont.
Alcohol and You: It Just Didnt Work Out
The more you hate alcohol the easier it will be for you to quit drinking. And in the same way you overcame the heartache of a failed relationship, you can learn to TRULY hate alcohol by recognizing the heartache it has caused you. And, just like that toxic relationship that you knew had to end, your relationship with alcohol must also end if you are to be truly happy
with your life.
Remember, you ARE worthy of having a better, happier life and as soon as you get the alcohol OUT, true happiness will come IN. Its time to end your relationship with alcohol. Today.
It's going to be hard for you to quit drinking if you still have positive feelings toward alcohol. However, what if you CAN learn to genuinely HATE alcohol?
