The Truth About Alcohol

truth about alcoholThe truth about alcohol is unpleasant, for far from being the bearer of good times, as it is commonly portrayed in advertisements, it actually brings pain and remorse into your life. It promises that youll feel good while drinking it, yet at the same time it silently wreaks havoc on your body, mind, relationships and finances.

And just when you may start to realize the great damage it is doing to you, it deceives you yet again into believing that it is somehow the best escape from the problems in your life. Problems that alcohol caused in the first place.

It also numbs you to the fact that alcohol damages the body in a hundred different ways. It is a cancer that takes hold of every area of your life, growing unseen year after year, until one day you wake up and ask yourself how did my life get so screwed up?

Alcohol is also a thief, stealing money from you every chance it gets. Thousands upon thousands of your dollars have disappeared, simply flushed down the drain because of alcohol abuse. Money that could have bought a new car, a nice home, or simply saved for a rainy day.

And it steals your time, as hour after hour is wasted drinking a poison instead of being spent with family and loved ones, or spent on a hobby, or working, or doing something constructive. Furthermore, it steals your youth by making you appear years older than you really. It causes premature graying (or losing) of your hair, deep wrinkles and unsightly blemishes, and the complete loss of a healthy skin tone. All the while being even more destructive inside of your body, as it destroys one organ after another, which takes years off of your life.

Heres the truth about alcohol: it isnt an escape from your problems it is the cause of your problems. And the sooner you learn how to stop drinking alcohol the sooner your problems will disappear, and your life will begin to dramatically improve in every way possible.

Today is the day YOU need to do something about your alcohol problem. Even if at first you can only take a baby step towards sobriety to change, you MUST take that first step. Face up to the truth: it is time to root out the cause of your problems and remove it from your life. Youll be thankful you did.

Is alcohol harmful after a workout?

It's Friday, you worked out during the day and you relax in the evening with a few drinks. Many of us have done it. But are you doing more damage by hitting the bottle after exercising?

After a workout, you need to rehydrate and refuel to replenish your body. This can take up to two hours.

Drinking a few glasses of alcohol after training is not necessarily dangerous. However, bear in mind that alcohol's dehydrating and diuretic nature will prolong the time it takes your body to rehydrate and recover after a training session.

Alcohol can also cause inflammation in muscle cells and create more post-training soreness. This can lengthen recovery times and affect your ability to train.

If you are going to exercise and enjoy a few drinks afterwards, limit your alcohol consumption to two to three drinks and make sure you drink water and eat good-quality food in between.

Dealing with Suicidal Thoughts & Feelings

Coping with suicidal thoughts: the first steps

Step #1: Promise not to do anything right now

Even though youre in a lot of pain right now, give yourself some distance between thoughts and action. Make a promise to yourself: "I will wait 24 hours and won't do anything drastic during that time." Or, wait a week.

Thoughts and actions are two different thingsyour suicidal thoughts do not have to become a reality. Theres is no deadline, no one pushing you to act on these thoughts immediately. Wait. Wait and put some distance between your suicidal thoughts and suicidal action.

Step #2: Avoid drugs and alcohol

Suicidal thoughts can become even stronger if you have taken drugs or alcohol. It is important to not use nonprescription drugs or alcohol when you feel hopeless or are thinking about suicide.

Step #3: Make your home safe

Remove things you could use to hurt yourself, such as pills, knives, razors, or firearms. If you are unable to do so, go to a place where you can feel safe. If you are thinking of taking an overdose, give your medicines to someone who can return them to you one day at a time as you need them.

Step #4: Take hope people DO get through this

Even people who feel as badly as you are feeling now manage to survive these feelings. Take hope in this. There is a very good chance that you are going to live through these feelings, no matter how much self-loathing, hopelessness, or isolation you are currently experiencing. Just give yourself the time needed and dont try to go it alone.

Step #5: Dont keep these suicidal feelings to yourself

Many of us have found that the first step to coping with suicidal thoughts and feelings is to share them with someone we trust. It may be a friend, a therapist, a member of the clergy, a teacher, a family doctor, a coach, or an experienced counselor at the end of a helpline. Find someone you trust and let them know how bad things are. Dont let fear, shame, or embarrassment prevent you from seeking help. Just talking about how you got to this point in your life can release a lot of the pressure thats building up and help you find a way to cope.

If youre feeling suicidal right now, please call for help! Call 1-800-273-TALK in the U.S. or visit IASP to find a helpline in your country. Or talk to someone you trust and let them know how bad things are.

Why do I feel this way?

Many kinds of emotional pain can lead to thoughts of suicide. The reasons for this pain are unique to each one of us, and our ability to cope with the pain differs from person to person. Don't listen to anyone who tells you, "That's not enough to be suicidal about." We are all different. What might be bearable to one person may not be bearable to you. There are, however, some common factors that may lead us to experience suicidal thoughts and feelings.

Feeling suicidal is often associated with problems that can be treated

Loss, depression, anxiety disorders, medical conditions, drug and alcohol dependency, financial, legal or school problems, and other life difficulties can all create profound emotional distress. They also interfere with our ability to problem solve. Even if you cant see it now, there are nearly always other solutions for these problems.

Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder are all treatable with changes in lifestyle, therapy, and medication. Most people who seek help for their problems and make constructive changes in their lives improve their situation and recover. Even if you have received treatment for a disorder before, or if youve already made attempts to solve your problems, you should know that its often necessary to try several different solutions before the right solution or combination of solutions can be found. Almost all problems can be treated or resolved.

Why suicide can seem like the only option

If you are unable to think of solutions other than suicide, it is not that other solutions dont exist, but rather that you are currently unable to see them. The intense emotional pain that youre experiencing right now can distort your thinking so it becomes harder to see possible solutions to problems, or to connect with those who can offer support. Therapists, counselors, or friends or loved ones, can help you to see solutions that otherwise may not be apparent to you. Give them a chance to help.

A suicidal crisis is almost always temporary

Although it might seem as if your pain and unhappiness will never end, it is important to realize that crises are usually temporary. Solutions are often found, feelings change, unexpected positive events occur. Remember: suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Give yourself the time necessary for things to change and the pain to subside.

Reaching out for help

Even if it doesn't feel like it right now, there are many people who want to support you during this difficult time. They won't try to argue with you about how miserable you feel or tell you to just "snap out of it." They will not judge you. They will simply listen to you and be there for you.

Reach out to someone. Do it now. If you promised yourself 24-hours or a week in step #1, use that time to tell someone what's going on with you. You can call a trusted friend, family member, minister, rabbi, doctor, or therapist. It doesnt matter who it is, as long as its someone you trust and who is likely to listen with compassion and acceptance.

If you dont know who to turn to:

In the U.S. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433). These toll-free crisis hotlines offer 24-hour suicide prevention and support. Your call is free and confidential.

Outside the U.S.  Visit IASP or Suicide.org to find a helpline in your country.

How to talk to someone about your suicidal thoughts

Even when youve decided who you can trust to talk to, admitting your suicidal thoughts to another person can be difficult.

  • Tell the person exactly what you are telling yourself. If you have a suicide plan, explain it to them.
  • Phrases such as, I can't take it anymore or Im done are vague and do not illustrate how serious things really are. Tell the person you trust that you are thinking about suicide.
  • If it is too difficult for you to talk about, try writing it down and handing a note to the person you trust. Or send them an email or text and sit with them while they read it.

What if you don't feel understood?

If you do not feel the person you have chosen to talk to has understood, tell someone else, or call a suicide crisis helpline. There are plenty of people out there who will understand. Dont let one bad experience stop you from finding someone who can help.

Ways to cope with suicidal thoughts and feelings

Remember that while it may seem as if these suicidal thoughts and feelings will never end, this is never a permanent condition. You WILL feel better again. In the meantime, there are some ways to help cope with your suicidal thoughts and feelings.

Things to do

  • Talk with someone every day, preferably face to face. Though you feel like withdrawing, ask trusted friends and acquaintances to spend time with you. Or continue to call a crisis helpline and talk about your feelings.
  • Make a safety plan. Develop a set of steps that you can follow during a suicidal crisis. It should include contact numbers for your doctor or therapist, as well as friends and family members who will help in an emergency.
  • Make a written schedule for yourself every day and stick to it, no matter what. Keep a regular routine as much as possible, even when your feelings seem out of control.
  • Get out in the sun or into nature for at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Exercise as vigorously as is safe for you. To get the most benefit, aim for 30 minutes of exercise per day. But you can start small. Three 10-minute bursts of activity can have a positive effect on mood.
  • Make time for things that bring you joy. Even if very few things bring you pleasure at the moment, force yourself to do the things you used to enjoy.
  • Remember your personal goals. You may have always wanted to travel to a particular place, read a specific book, own a pet, move to another place, learn a new hobby, volunteer, go back to school, or start a family. Write your personal goals down.

Things to avoid:

  • Being alone. Solitude can make suicidal thoughts even worse. Visit a friend, or family member, or pick up the phone and call a crisis helpline.
  • Alcohol and drugs. Drugs and alcohol can increase depression, hamper your problem-solving ability, and can make you act impulsively.
  • Doing things that make you feel worse. Listening to sad music, looking at certain photographs, reading old letters, or visiting a loved ones grave can all increase negative feelings.
  • Thinking about suicide and other negative thoughts. Try not to become preoccupied with suicidal thoughts as this can make them even stronger. Dont think and rethink negative thoughts. Find a distraction. Giving yourself a break from suicidal thoughts can help, even if its for a short time.

Recovering from suicidal feelings

Even if your suicidal thoughts and feelings have subsided, get help for yourself. Experiencing that sort of emotional pain is itself a traumatizing experience. Finding a support group or therapist can be very helpful in decreasing the chances that you will feel suicidal again in the future. You can get help and referrals from your doctor or from the organizations listed in our Related Links section.

5 steps to recovering from suicidal thoughts and feelings

  • Identify triggers or situations that lead to feelings of despair or generate suicidal thoughts, such as an anniversary of a loss, alcohol, or stress from relationships. Find ways to avoid these places, people, or situations.
  • Take care of yourself. Eat right, dont skip meals, and get plenty of sleep. Exercise is also key: it releases endorphins, relieves stress, and promotes emotional well-being.
  • Build your support network. Surround yourself with positive influences and people who make you feel good about yourself. The more youre invested in other people and your community, the more you have to losewhich will help you stay positive and on the recovery track.
  • Develop new activities and interests. Find new hobbies, volunteer activities, or work that gives you a sense of meaning and purpose. When youre doing things you find fulfilling, youll feel better about yourself and feelings of despair are less likely to return.
  • Learn to deal with stress in a healthy way. Find healthy ways to keep your stress levels in check, including exercising, meditating, using sensory strategies to relax, practicing simple breathing exercises, and challenging self-defeating thoughts.

100 Days of Sobriety

sobriety feels goodApril 1st marked 100 days since I stopped drinking alcohol, and I started thinking about the many good things and a couple of not-so-good things that have happened to me since then. See, you didnt expect me to list the not-so-good things, now did you? Sobriety isnt all peaches and cream, you know!(note: this article was originally written in 2004, when my sobriety adventure began!)

On the bright side, I have noticed a remarkable difference in how I feel without alcohol in my body. I no longer have daily headaches or nightly stomach aches, and my overall energy level is not only much higher, but it is much more consistent throughout the day.

I also feel that I am thinking MUCH more clearly and that my thoughts are stronger and crisper, if that makes sense. In other words, Im simply thinking much more deeply now that alcohol isnt messing around with my brain chemistry. In addition, I am eating a MUCH healthier diet, and I feel stronger, younger, and more in control of my daily life and my future than ever before.

Things are also very positive on the financial side, as Im on pace to at least DOUBLE my income this year and its simply because my sobriety has allowed me to work much more efficiently at my home business. Or, to put it another way, I no longer have hangovers getting in the way of my making money! Also, I am saving a LOT of money by not wasting it on alcohol, which has allowed me to reduce a great deal of debt in other areas of my life.

So, to sum up the positives: my overall health is MUCH improved, and I definitely feel better in my body and my mind than I have in at least 20 years. I am making more money, saving more money and I HAVE a lot more money than I used to. And that, needless to say, makes me very, very happy.

Sobriety Isnt Always Easy

But, as I said, there are a couple of not-so-good things in the past 100 days. The first is my weight:  I am presently about 30 pounds overweight, and I must confess that I truly believed that I would EASILY lose that amount in 3 months of not drinking. But, it hasnt happened, though I did lose about 7 pounds within the fist 7 weeks just nothing since then. But, to be honest, I havent really been exercising as much as I should have been, as I guess I was using the not drinking alcohol as a crutch to not exercise! Ive since rededicated myself to that important area of my life, so I am quite positive that the next year will finally see me lose that 30 pounds of flab.

The other not-so-good thing is that my girlfriend kind of misses me drinking. I think its a combination of a couple of things: 1) she drinks (very little), and she is happier when we share things; and 2) she perceives me as being more fun when I drank before. To her sobriety isnt as important as it is to me. I think whats actually happening is that as long as shes known me (going on 7 years) Ive been a drinker. We have a LOT of good memories, and shes connecting those good memories to the fact that we both drank. I deeply feel that the longer I avoid alcohol, and the more good memories we have in the coming months and years (which we will!), the more shell begin to identify me with simply being a non-drinker. This will only serve to guide us both toward being healthier and happier for years to come.

My Journey to Sobriety Has Only Just Begun. How About Yours?

Looking back at my first 100 days of sobriety there have been MANY positives in my life both in how I feel today, and how I view my future. There have been only TWO slightly negative things, but both of those will become positives in the coming months.

I know its not an easy thing for some people to quit, but I have to tell you that its easier than it seems if you focus on just making minor changes to your life. For instance, cut back on the happy hours, or make certain days of the week no drinking days. Before you know it alcohol will be at the bottom of your list of priorities right where it belongs. Sobriety is NOT that far out of reach, as long as you keep trying.

For me, the bottom line is that I would absolutely do it all over again because the day I stopped drinking alcohol was the best day in my life. Please decide to reduce or eliminate alcohol from your life, and you too will find as many positives as I did. Begin your own personal road to sobriety today!

things will improveIve written before about the many reasons to quit drinking alcohol, as well as details on how I stopped drinking alcohol, but I thought it would be interesting to look at how things will improve AFTER you have quit drinking.

From my own experience, there are 5 distinct improvements you will notice when you remove alcohol from your life. And these improvements are felt every area of your life.

The first change is how you will FEEL. You will note a gradual improvement in your sense of well-being within just a couple of days of quitting. Youll also notice that those general aches and pains, or that sense of just feeling lousy that youve had for years will begin to diminish with each passing week. You will feel healthier on the inside, and that sense of well-being will translate itself into your physical appearance, as well as your attitude. Because you feel better, you will look healthier and feel happier.

The second change is how you will THINK. You will begin to have stronger, deeper and clearer thoughts, and that alcohol fogginess will lift from your mind. You will be able to not only ponder your life as it is today, but have a clearer and more elaborate idea of where you want to go in the future. Because you are able to use your mind without alcohol impeding it, you will make smarter and wiser decisions each day.

The third change is what you DO. You will begin to spend your time in worthwhile situations, and around people and circumstances that are good for you. You will find yourself seeking out things that youve always wanted to do, but didnt because alcohol prevented you from doing so. Your daily life will be more fulfilling as you enjoy doing things, and you no longer allow your activities to be dictated by alcoholism.

The fourth change is what you SAY. You will start sounding like a more optimistic person, and people will see you as being genuinely confident in yourself and your future. You will be more complimentary and helpful to others, and constantly remark on the positives that you see every day. The negativity that surrounds those who drink will be repulsive to you, and you will notice a new commitment to speak in a positive, self-empowering manner.

The fifth change is what you WANT. You will start wanting to be around people and places that bring out the best in everyone. You will want to take part in helping others, either by volunteering or mentoring, so that they dont make the same mistakes you did. You will want to improve yourself a little bit each day so that you have more to offer your family, friends and loved ones.

These 5 improvements just scrape the surface on all the good things you will experience when you stop drinking. And yet they impact every area of your life, from what you think, say, and do to what you want and how you feel about your life and your future. Stop drinking alcohol today, and see your life improve in every way!

Ginseng Can Help You Stop Drinking

When you decide to stop drinking, you may look for assistance at home through herbal remedies. Keeping symptoms of withdrawal under control can be achieved through the use of ginseng. Ginseng can be found over the counter at most pharmacies and drug stores in pill form.

Ginseng naturally breaks down alcohol in the system and flushes away the toxins that linger in your body through long term alcohol use. It can also lower the rate at which your body absorbs alcohol inside the stomach and digestive tract. Because of these medicinal characteristics of ginseng, it reduces the symptoms of withdrawal but is also a way to manage cravings.

Take ginseng daily, even twice per day if you feel heavy cravings. Since it is easy to find, it is a good starting point for a home remedy to ease the effects of quitting drinking alcohol. It is also a supplement easily taken without change to your diet.

Quit Drinking Alcohol On Your Own By Staying Social

Staying social in the midst of quitting drinking may seem counterproductive. However, creating a healthy social system will aid in making positive choices to stick to your goal. You may have to ask important people, help me stop drinking and you will find that people will reach out to assist you.

Try to make plans with the people you have talked to about your goal. They will want to be with you and will help to schedule activities or time together that do not involve alcohol. These people who are helping you will try to keep temptations away.

Social activity will also help to keep you busy and away from booze. Surround yourself with happy people and resist the urge to be home alone or out at the bar. This is a great opportunity to connect with a local community through volunteer work, organized sports or art classes. The key is to find people who will not tempt you with alcohol, but will provide you with healthy interactions.

How To Give Up Alcohol By Deserting Denial

Denial is a common occurrence among people who abuse alcohol. You may convince yourself that you didnt drink as much as you actually did. You may blame your drinking on other problems in life, not taking responsibility for your own actions. In reality, drinking has probably caused most of the problems and you are just repeating the same mistakes.

You need to stop denying yourself of the truth. Be honest with how many drinks you are consuming. Mark the bottle at the beginning of the night so you can see how far down it is the next morning. Keep your beer bottles and count them when you wake up. Be honest with yourself.

Look at what you are considering problems. If you are using alcohol to avoid them, stop. Confront your problems with a sober mind and stop denying that you use alcohol to mask that pain. It will not be easy, but unless you try to solve a problem, the problem will remain and alcohol cannot fix it.

Using Evening Primrose Is A Proven Trick To Give Up Drinking

Finding the right herbs in the correct amounts to quit drinking may seem difficult. However, there are many common herbs that you can readily find over the counter that will make the process to quit drinking easier. One common herb is evening primrose.

Evening primrose decreases cravings for alcohol by regulating your digestion. You can find it in the form of oil extracted from the seeds. Ingest the oil by taking three drops once per day for about three weeks. You can take the extract directly, or mix it with water.

During this three week period the oil will work at breaking down bacteria inside the digestive tract. Everyone has a build-up of bacteria in their intestines, however with long term alcohol use the bacteria are holding on to toxins that will make your body crave alcohol. Evening primrose will flush that bacteria out of your system, reducing cravings and make the quitting process easier.

Bitter Gourd Is One Of The Remedies To Give Up Booze

Another herbal home remedy to aid with quitting drinking is bitter gourd. The Bitter Gourd is a fruit that can be juiced to utilize the benefits to diminish the signs of alcoholism from the inside out. It can help heal the liver and helps to control cravings for alcohol.

Drink one eight ounce glass of bitter gourd juice every morning on an empty stomach to reap the most benefit from this fruit. If you do not like the taste, you can mix it with milk to make it more palatable. Along with keeping cravings for alcohol at bay, it also resets the functioning of your liver, helping you heal from the inside out.

Bitter Gourd is also known to help control appetite. Along with controlling cravings for alcohol, it will control cravings for foods you associate with alcohol such as high-sugar foods and fried foods. The bitter gourd helps with the quitting process on several levels and is an excellent consideration for anyone who wants to stop drinking alcohol.

Reduce Alcohol Consumption With Bar Activity

While you are trying to quit drinking, being in a bar may seem like a bad choice. But if you are taking it one step at a time, you probably dont want to abandon your social scene either. Knowing what to do and how to act in a bar with less or no alcohol is important.

Instead of sitting at a table having round after round, bring some cards or a game to play with your friends. This will be more engaging mentally and slow drinking down a bit. It will also offer more meaningful or different conversation.

You can also engage in bar games such as pool or darts. Getting up and moving about will keep you busy and not drinking as much. Giving up your bar friends cold turkey may not be the best choice, but engaging in some new actives while at the bar will help you in your goal to reduce your alcohol consumption and will keep you in touch with friends.

Learning From A Relapse Can Help In The Treatment for Alcoholism

If you have created a goal, either short term or long term, big or small, you may find yourself relapsing. You may go a day or a week or a month without a drink and then give in to temptations and have an all-night bender. Dont beat yourself up about it.

Mistakes happen and it may happen to you. Instead of feeling bad or worthless or weak, think about what led to the relapse. Possibly a stressful day with anxiety let you to wanting just one drink to calm down. Perhaps you were at a party and someone who didnt know you quit drinking offered and you thought Just one wont hurt.

Whatever the reason, look at the result and how it makes you feel. Think about what you can do to avoid it in the future. Maybe you need to go back to your social settings and ask your friends and family, help me stop drinking.

The Ball and Chain Effect of Alcohol Addiction

ball and chainIf one phrase ever accurately described the daily life of someone who addicted to alcohol, it would have to be ball and chain.

Starting from the moment the alcoholic wakes up, their drinking problem weighs them down and they struggle all day to work effectively, be at their best, or simply ignore a hangover.

Were all familiar with the term ball and chain, and most of us know that from the late 19th century to early 20th century many prisoners had to wear with such a device. Thankfully weve become a little more civilized in how we handle those incarcerated today.

However, the term is still alive. And I dont mean just in a pejorative manner about ones own spouse! I mean in connection to alcoholism, and how it literally imprisons those caught up in its grips.

Every little thing becomes much more difficult to accomplish, to get through, or even to put up with because the previous days drinking has taken such a toll in energy and mental alertness.

If this sounds like a typical day in your life, then perhaps its time to take a few steps to cut the chain. Begin by recognizing how alcohol is destroying your life, from the inside out. Its eating away at you on the inside, while it also insidiously sabotages your life on the outside. Start to HATE it for what its done TO you.

Read 10 Steps to Quit Drinking Alcohol and keep making every effort you can to cut that ball and chain, and to reclaim your life. If you feel that you can not control your drinking, then at least take a baby step towards sobriety and start to overcome your addiction. Before you know it, the morning will arrive where you wake up and you suddenly realize that youre free of that ball and chain.

Today, take a step to cut that chain no matter how small a step it is. You have everything to gain, and youll soon start to feel genuinely happy, and excited about your future.
