Nonalcoholicsnormies, in recovery parlanceare often in the dark about the dynamics of alcohol and drug addiction: What does it mean to be an alcoholic, and what is recovery about? As a result, they sometimes tend to say things to people in recovery that can be inappropriate, hurtful, and can even cause harm.
Youre boring when you dont drink.
Okay, that makes me feel great. This is usually from someone who still drinks, and doesnt know how to relate to a friend on a new, non-drinking basis. This can be hurtful, and it can make someone new to recovery doubtful about their commitment to getting and staying well.
Best reply? Yeah? Ill be really boringdead.
Why dont you just drink less?
Heres a person who isnt versed in the medical concept of an allergy-like reaction to alcohol: the first drink causes a craving that overpowers any amount of common sense or willpower that one tries to muster.
Best reply? You know that feeling when youve had enough? (Yeah.) Well, I dont.
Why do you still go to those meetings? Arent you better now? And: Arent you just replacing addictions?
Its good to be armed with answers to these. If youve found a home in the recovery community, you dont need to justify it to anyone, but its useful to know why you keep going. And to know that better now is at best a continuing and contingent reprieve. The real answers to these questions dont need to be given, just knownthat recovery is a we thing; that gratitude for recovery is best expressed within that community; that hearing the message repeated reinforces it in an otherwise forgetful mind; and that the best way to keep it is to give it away.
Best reply? I like them. I believe theyre helpful.
